MAKEDA | OWNER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Hi there, my name is Makeda! You might be wondering, “what kind of name is that?!” so allow me to explain. My name is actually indigenous to Ethiopia, and it means “greatness.” It was the name of The Queen of Sheba, who ruled ancient Ethiopia in the 10th century BCE and began the royal dynasty of Ethiopia. Interestingly, I was born in Ghana, West Africa to Ghanaian parents and raised in Northern Virginia.
“Greatness” is what I strive for in everything I do whether planning stellar soirees on a limited budget or an extravagant gala for a worthwhile charity. It is incredibly fulfilling for me to produce and deliver a uniquely crafted, and flawlessly executed event that clients will remember fondly for years to come.
With nearly a decade of event planning and digital marketing experience, I know the time and detail that go into planning experiential events that WOW! I believe in events that reflect the style and personality of the client, and that the intricate details are what matter most.
What makes me qualified to design and execute your event? I have planned experiential events and created digital marketing and social media campaigns for Infiniti, Prudential, ESSENCE Festival, The Root 100, Toyota, Armani Exchange and many more. For the past three years I worked at Univision and Time Inc. brands. For both companies, I spearheaded events and digital marketing for their African-American publications. I have planned and produced large-scale events in major markets like New York, Washington, DC, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Atlanta, including corporate galas, fashion shows, panels, weddings and society events.
I began my career in the non-profit sector at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, where I worked on the largest public radio and television conference in the country. I then worked as a publicist for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, working alongside former Washington, DC Mayors Adrian Fenty and Vincent Gray, planning regional events for the Virginia, Maryland and DC communities. I also helped kick start the Capitol Hill Business Improvement District’s annual Magic & Miracles gala.
From managing multiple deadlines and projects, to leveraging new media and alternative marketing outlets, my effective communication skills set and result-driven attitude will ensure your event is executed perfectly and on budget.
As a fashion fiend, you can find me on GlamazonDiaries.com, my 10-year old blog, where I write about fashion, food and lifestyle. Through my blog, I have been fortunate and proud to be an ambassador for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour and Redbook magazines.
